Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is an approach to development that aims to leave biodiversity in a better state following the development. It encourages developers that are having an impact on biodiversity to provide an increase in appropriate natural habitats and ecological features. The aim of biodiversity offsetting is to halt the loss of biodiversity through development and restore ecological networks.

Biodiversity net gain is calculated using the Statutory Metric. The metric is used to turn the habitats on the site, both pre development (obtained from a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA)) and post development (obtained from landscaping and development plans), into biodiversity units (bu), which can then be used to calculate the overall change in biodiversity caused by the development.

Switch Ecology have extensive experience using the biodiversity metrics, most recently the Statutory Metric, to support planning applications. We will carry out a PEA of the site to assess the baseline biodiversity units and can advise on elements of the site design to maximise the on site biodiversity units obtained during the development.

Please note that the metric does not take into account the presence of protected species for which compensation is considered separate.
